Shinobazu Pond (不忍池 Shinobazu-ike), adjacent to Ueno Park, is full of water lilies and waterfowl and has the picturesque little Bentendō Hall shrine, dedicated to the goddess Benzaiten, in the middle. This particular building dates back to 1958. The 17th century original was destroyed in the air raids of 1945.

Notice the tall, thin building with floors branching off at every angle? Designed by Japanese architect, Kiyinori Kikutake and completed in 1994, this is Hotel Sofitel.

Nice view of Sakura tree at the side of the pond

Shinobazu Pond dominates the southwestern side of the park - 600 yen will hire you a rowing boat; 700 yen for a swan pedal boat.
