TSUKIJI FISH MARKET

The Central Tokyo Wholesale Market, aka Tsukiji Fish Market, known to be one of the largest fish market in the world. Tsukiji sells 2,500 tons of fish every business day, handles 450 species of sea life, employs 15,000 people, and covers 56 bustling acres.

Tsukiji is not a retail market and, while it does include some shops that sell meat and vegetables, it is not a farmers' market. It is a wholesale center for restaurants, caterers and fishmongers.

The sight of the many kinds of fresh fish, shellfish and other seafood and the busy atmosphere of scooters, trucks, sellers and buyers hurrying around is a sight to behold.

Tsukiji Fish Market main entrance

Truck carrying loads of fresh seafood.

Assorted fruits and dried food are available for sale.

A visit to Tsukiji Market is best combined with a sushi breakfast at one of the several restaurants which are located in the market.

You are welcome to wander through most parts of the sprawling complex, provided you stay out of the way.

Watch out for the fast moving motorcycle porters/mechanized carts, i almost got hit by a tonne of tuna carried by it. :p
